Fitness is Simple, Life is Hard
Fitness is simple, life is hard.
Lift weights consistently two to three times a week, progress in load and complexity when earned as dictated by your ability to demonstrate superb form.
Develop your cardiovascular ability to meet the demands of your daily life by varying the lengths, modalities, and intensities as dictated by your current ability.
Eat fruits, veggies, protein, carbohydrates, and fats in the right quantities that align with your goal and support your season of life without shame and guilt but with maximum intent.
Train your mind as you train your body to show up 1% better each day for yourself and those you love.
Yes, fitness is simple, but not easy because easy doesn’t lead to greater fitness.
Life is hard.
Life gets in the way. Our roles and competing demands get in the way.
Career goals, grind culture, hustle culture. The economy and cost of living.
I have been coaching fitness since 2012 (CrossFit since 2014)
I have been in the best shape of my life followed by the worst shape of my life and now I am somewhere in the middle.
I have also had the privilege of walking many different life paths.
I have been a gang member, in jail, in a rehab program, a drug and alcohol counselor, had drug addicts and criminals released to my custody to change their lives, been a single 20 something year old with no real responsibilities, married, small business owner, dad.
I share all that to say this. We greatly underestimate our human ability to ADAPT.
Consistency looks different across different parts of our life.
There are times in your life you can show up to class at 9AM everyday. During other times you might only have 45min to do a customized routine based on your goals (I have done both at different times in my life)
We have to be willing to let go of the present moment and adapt to what is coming.
I share this because I have had a good summer routine and now my eldest is entering school at the end of the month.
I am working and reworking my calendar to see where my workouts go, where my deep work goes. Etc.
The one thing I know?
Consistency matters, even if it’s only 2-3x a week. So long as those 2-3x a week what you are doing is VERY intentional and purposeful, not random or distracted.
It doesn’t take much to move the needle of fitness forward.
Just the best that you can give.
And… maybe your best is good enough!
Those consistent investments compound over time.
I am blessed to have/ have had multiple clients that I have trained for over 3+ years. There are lots of micro wins that happen along the way.
Weights go up, movements that were hard become easy. Pain goes away.
The really big wins are a result of steady effort over time. The wins that a lot of people seek and hope for in the short term, actually take years to manifest.
I share all that not so that it is discouraging, but so that you are encouraged to do the best you can with what you have whether that’s 30-45min 2-3x a week or 1 hour 4-6x a week.
Either way, make sure that you maximize your time by doing the things that move you towards your goals.
Remember that while things may not look the way you are used to, that’s okay and no period is forever change is the only constant.
The better we can be at adapting the better our lives are for it.
